Punakha Dzong is a stunning fortress located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Built in the 17th century, it served as the capital and seat of government of Bhutan until 1955. Punakha Dzong is an important religious, political, and cultural site, where the first king was crowned, and it continues to be the winter home of the Je Khenpo (chief abbot) and the central monk body.
