Maslenitsa, or Pancake Week, is a traditional Russian festival held in late February or early March that marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring. The festival includes making and eating pancakes (blinis), which symbolize the sun, as well as various outdoor activities, games, and performances. It culminates in the burning of a huge straw effigy, symbolizing the renewal of life and the start of the new agricultural season.
