Kunta Kinteh Island, formerly known as James Island, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the River Gambia. The island played a significant role in the history of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The remains of Fort James, a British fort, can still be found on the island. The island was named after Kunta Kinteh, a character from Alex Haley's novel Roots, who was believed to have been taken as a slave from this location.
